WELCOME. I’M DAVID BROWN.
I’M A DEPTH PSYCHOTHERAPIST BASED IN SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
In my practice, I work with individual adults, couples and families to dive beneath the surface-level issues to discover the underlying causes of distress. This journey into the depths can increase our self-awareness, help us find our best answers to life-changing questions, and guide us to a more enjoyable life. Much of my work involves men and women who are feeling stuck in their lives, or are in the grips of anxiety, depression, addiction, or relationship challenges. I also enjoy working closely with people who are experiencing challenges related to men’s issues, trauma, life transitions, spiritual development, and the LGBTQ community. My life and work are guided by my extensive travels and immersion in the wisdom traditions of Asia and the indigenous ways of the Americas. I also continually invest in my own process of self-discovery and growth through therapy, while undertaking advanced training to deepen my understanding of topics such as Jungian Psychology, psychoanalysis, trauma and the soul, psychedelic psychotherapy and spirituality.
I LIKE TO THINK OF MY TEXTURED HISTORY AS A COLLECTION OF SCATTERED PIECES OF A PUZZLE, PICKED UP AND ASSEMBLED OVER TIME TO SHOW ME THE BIG PICTURE OF THE WORK I’M MEANT TO DO.
WHERE MY STORY BEGINS
My story begins in my undergraduate years, where I studied Pure Mathematics and the abstract concepts that influence engineering, physics, economics, and astronomy. It was here that I learned to develop models for thinking about complexity. That capacity lends itself well to navigating the complexities that we face within the human psyche and in the world.
Later, after completing my undergraduate studies, I was successful in a fifteen-year career in management and marketing. While I enjoyed shaping others’ abilities to advance in their careers, relationships, and goals for personal growth, I knew there was another calling, waiting to be answered, that would be more fulfilling for me on an intellectual, emotional, and spiritual level.
When I realized that my answer to that calling was to move into a career related to healing, I made the decision to pursue graduate school, and earned a Master’s degree in Integral Counseling Psychology from the California Institute of Integral Studies.
It was there that I first experienced the tremendous healing power of depth psychotherapy, bringing the big picture view of my work’s purpose into focus.
Throughout my career as a psychotherapist, I’ve been privileged to work in a variety of mental health settings, from clinics to hospitals, private practices to public schools. In each of these experiences, I’ve gained valuable experience that informs my work.
